Drawing from life is a disciplined activity, designed to keep the artist flexible and observant. Artists learn anatomy by making hundreds of life drawings of models. I often use professional artists' models, but just as often I will draw friends or people passing in the street, or traveling on the bus. Sketchbook drawings may be used as source material later in the studio for paintings. But a drawing may also be a completed artwork, where the artist has said everything in a few lines.
My drawings reflect what is going on in my life at that moment, like a pictorial diary. This type of alla prima work is completed in one sitting, thus preserving the freshness and spontaneity typical of drawings.
